When I laughed
When did I last laugh
I laughed today
Not because I was happy
Because I didn’t realize
I had said a joke
They laughed
So I laughed too
It didn’t reach my soul
Or even my heart
There were not even wrinkle lines
Under my eyes
When I laughed
When did I laugh last
I laughed today
Not because I was happy
I laughed when they laughed
Yet my happiness is a Blur still

This poem reflects the emotional numbness that can accompany grief, depression, or prolonged emotional pain. It describes a situation where laughter occurs outwardly, but the feeling of genuine happiness is absent.
The act of laughing becomes automatic and disconnected from true joy, highlighting the difference between appearing happy and actually experiencing happiness internally.
A central theme of the poem is the loss of emotional connection to positive feelings. The repeated questioning of when laughter last felt real suggests that happiness has become distant and difficult to recognize.
Although laughter still happens, it feels hollow and lacks the warmth, spontaneity, and emotional fulfillment that usually accompany genuine joy. This creates a sense of disorientation, where happiness feels like something remembered rather than something currently experienced.
The poem also captures the way people often continue participating in social interactions even while carrying deep sadness. Joining in the laughter of others becomes a social response rather than an emotional one.
Outward expressions suggest engagement and normalcy, but internally there remains a sense of emptiness and detachment. This contrast emphasizes how emotional pain is not always visible to those around us.
Another important aspect of the poem is its portrayal of happiness as something blurred and difficult to reach. Rather than being completely absent, happiness seems distant, unclear, and out of focus.
This suggests that the capacity for joy still exists but is obscured by grief, sorrow, or emotional exhaustion. The inability to fully connect with positive emotions becomes one of the lingering effects of pain.
Overall, the poem is about emotional disconnection and the struggle to experience authentic happiness after a period of profound sadness.
It captures the feeling of going through the motions of joy without truly feeling it, while longing for a time when laughter came naturally and reached the heart rather than remaining only on the surface.
