When grief comes
It gets you not ready for it
It finds you on the floor
It hits you in the gut

It destroys your soul
When grief stays
It keeps you on the floor
It feeds you with doubt after doubt
It makes you obsolete
It renders you helpless
It grips at your heart like steel
When grief leaves
It leaves that space
It gives you that hollow echo
It still takes your heart away
It stains your love
It still marks you as lost
Grief
We all find it somehow
Or it finds us somewhat
It favors no one
It seeks out everyone
Grief makes you lost
Yet grief will make you
Grief is still here
Grief can hold you
Grief Poetry
Let it in
Then let it go

This poem is a reflection on the nature of grief and the powerful impact it has on a person’s life. It describes grief as an unexpected force that arrives without warning, knocking people down emotionally and leaving them vulnerable.

The poem portrays grief as something that can overwhelm the mind and heart, filling a person with doubt, helplessness, and a sense of being disconnected from who they once were.

Rather than presenting grief as a brief emotion, it is depicted as a presence that settles into life and changes the way a person experiences the world.

The poem also explores the different stages of grief’s existence. When grief first arrives, it is destructive and consuming. When it stays, it becomes a constant companion that influences thoughts, emotions, and self-perception.

Even when grief begins to fade, it does not disappear completely. It leaves behind traces of itself, memories, scars, and an emptiness where something or someone once existed.

The poem acknowledges that loss changes people permanently, and although the intensity of grief may lessen, its impact often remains woven into the fabric of their lives.

At its heart, the poem presents grief as a universal human experience. It recognizes that no one is exempt from loss and that grief eventually touches every life.

Yet the poem also suggests that grief is not only a source of suffering; it can also shape and transform a person. “Grief makes you lost / Yet grief will make you” highlights the paradox that grief can both break and rebuild.

The final message encourages acceptance rather than resistance. By allowing grief to be felt, acknowledged, and understood, it can eventually be released, making room for healing while still honoring the love and loss that gave rise to it.
